Nigeria to Lead Africa in Telecom Growth Through 2014
"Telecom industry liberalization has pushed market penetration of telecom services in Nigeria from just 1.2% in 2002 to an estimated 48.9% at the end of 2009, thanks to the entry of new operators, the expansion of CDMA operators into mobile services, the provision of low-cost services, and the expansion of coverage to underserved areas," says Badii Kechiche, Senior Analyst at Pyramid Research and author of this report. "2010 will see the introduction of mobile number portability and mobile termination rate cuts, which we expect to improve competitiveness despite the short-term impact on interconnect revenue and subscription growth," says Kechiche.
Nigeria is one of the most competitive markets in Africa, with more than double the average number of operators than any other African country, Kechiche notes. "Operators have been investing in and upgrading their networks to meet demand, since they realize that their success will be based on a differentiated service quality, attractive services, and a good value proposition," he adds.

Viruses Designed for IPhones Can Also Infect IPads
"This doesn't mean we're about to face an avalanche of infections. We have always stated that as Apple increases its market share, cyber-crooks will begin to show more interest in targeting the platform," said Luis Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs. "However, we are certainly beginning to see more proofs of concept, and so advise all Mac users to follow the manufacturer's recommendations to maximize security on their operating systems."
Despite the fact that Apple has made it impossible to install peripherals and software outside of those found in its own App Store, cyber-criminals have found a way to infect jailbroken iPad devices with malware.
All malware designed for iPhones, such as the iPhone/Eeki.A worm that PandaLabs warned about last year, will have the same ability to infect and spread to iPad devices due to the iPad and the iPhone sharing the same operating system, known as iOS. Apple released iOS 4, the new version of its operating system, this Monday.
The iPhone/Eeki.A worm infected jailbroken iPhones. Jailbreaking refers to the process by which criminals tamper with iPhones in order to install applications that are not available in the official Apple App Store. In addition to the iPad, malware designed for the iPhone can also infect the iPad touch.

Telkom Kenya Gets 3G License with Government Loan
"We are giving them a shareholder loan through which they will pay (for 3G licence) so it's actually funded by Telkom itself through a shareholder loan by the government," Esther Koimett, investment secretary at the ministry of finance, told Reuters by phone.
Although the value of the loan was not specified, it is presumed to be around the same level as the US$10 million that the 3G license will cost.
The company has also confirmed that it will launch its 3G network sometime in the fourth quarter of this year. The company has already deployed a trial network in ten locations and started live tests last December.

Singapore and Malaysia Studying Possibility of Lowering Mobile Roaming Rates
The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) are currently seeking operators' feedback on a proposal that seeks to progressively reduce the mobile roaming rates charged to Singapore and Malaysia mobile phone users, by up to 30 percent for voice calls and up to 50 percent for SMSes when they use the mobile roaming service provided by all mobile operators in Malaysia and Singapore respectively.
This proposal would be implemented through reductions of both the wholesale inter-operator charges and the retail end user charges, and will be contingent on both countries following through the agreement. Further details will be available only after both agencies have completed discussions with their respective operators.
Both the IDA and MCMC expect to provide an update on this proposal in 3Q 2010.
The telecom regulators for both countries, IDA and MCMC have been studying the rates charged by mobile operators of both countries to better understand the prevailing industry practice and charging model. As mobile roaming charges involve different price components charged by operators from both countries, any study of and regulatory requirement to reduce roaming charges will require coordination and cooperation between both regulators to ensure that users from both countries benefit from the decision.

Telstra and Nokia Siemens Networks LTE Trial Achieves 100Mbps at 75km
The two companies are testing the application of LTE technology in regional areas through a combination of laboratory and long range field testing to determine the limitations that physical distance imposes on the LTE customer experience.
Michael Rocca, Chief Operations Officer, said the range testing is of critical importance for the future of this technology in regional Australia.
"Australia has the sixth largest landmass with the ninth lowest population density in the world so any technology we introduce has to travel long distances, cover large areas and still perform to the levels Telstra customers have come to enjoy.
"Telstra's Next G network does this extremely well today and we want to ensure that when we bring LTE technology to Australian consumers, our customer experience remains one of the best in the world," Mr Rocca said.
The extended range field trial was conducted between Mount Hope and Mount Burrumboot in central Victoria by engineers from Telstra and Nokia Siemens Networks. The trial used Nokia Siemens Networks' commercially-available LTE-ready Flexi Multiradio Base Station and Evolved Packet Core (EPC), with pre-commercial LTE USB dongles from third-party vendors.
Kalevi Kostiainen, head of Nokia Siemens Networks, Australia and New Zealand said, "The outstanding results of this trial were made possible through close collaboration between Telstra and Nokia Siemens Networks. The benefits of LTE in urban environments are currently being deployed globally, having already been extensively tested and the business benefits well understood. Through this unique joint trial we can now see how LTE can be extended to provide cost effective solutions for rural and remote environments."

Apple Launches New iPhone
Tue Jun 08, 2010 | By Absar Taqvi- News Team
One thing that the IT and smartphone boom has given to media is loads and loads of news. Everytime you switch on a website there is one vendor or the other releasing some modification in or altogether a new device.
After a long wait, the smartest smartphone maker reveals its new addition to the showcase of world’s Hi-Fi gadgets. Apple launched its new iPhone, called as iPhone 4, on Monday, 7th June 2010 at the Californian vendor’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
This version of the iPhone, for definite reasons, brings advancements in various features; the foremost of which is the FaceTime video calling. The feature for the first time allows video calling on a mobile device possible. The new iPhone is equipped with front and rear cameras enabling the users to interact on a mobile device like never before.
The phone has a better camera, more battery life, longer talk time and extended video playback. Microsoft’s Bing search engine has been incorporated in the iPhone along with Yahoo and Google. Plus, this is the thinnest smartphone ever, i.e. only 9.3 millimeters.
The iPhone 4 will go on sale from June 24th in US, France, Germany, Japan and the UK.
One underscoring fact that came out of Steve Jobs’ speech at WW Conference is the largest roll out this iPhone will see. As predicted, it will reach to over 88 countries by September.
